Affirmations are a popular tool for change in personal development fields. Maybe you’ve even tried them out for yourself? I am not actually suggesting affirmations are completely ineffective. But lets take a closer look at why they might not be working for you and how you can super-charge your affirmations.
Affirmations are statements that positively describe a desired situation or state of being. For example; “I am healthy and happy”. Generally affirmations are repeated frequently, written, spoken or thought, over a period of time. The idea is that the affirmation, which must be stated in the positive, programs your mind, triggering positive change.
Feeling is required!
You need to drop from thoughts into feelings while you are repeating your affirmation. Think the following statement in your mind now; “I am surrounded by love”. Now drop your attention into the area of your heart, imagine someone you love and who loves you, and affirm “I am surrounded by love” whilst staying connected to warm open feelings in your heart. Notice the difference in your internal experience. Affirmations need to be repeated with a mind, body and heart felt sense that your affirmation is already reality.
Role of your subconscious
Our subconscious mind is just that, the part of our mind that is below our conscious awareness. We are not aware of our subconscious beliefs and motivations. Think of your subconscious as a recording device, many of our deeply held beliefs are recorded before the age of seven. Your subconscious mind has a major impact on your thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
Affirmations are activated in the conscious mind. Affirming “I am happy and healthy” over and over again when there are contrasting negative beliefs in the subconscious mind is rather like putting a new rug over top of a very dirty and dusty floor. It might cover some of the dirt and dust but the floor still needs cleaning.
Resting on your affirmations?
If you repeatedly affirm “My body is healthy and vibrant” while sitting on the couch all day eating lots of unhealthy sugary and fatty food, you are not going to create a healthy vibrant body! Affirmations are most helpful and powerful when we follow through with inspired action. Change happens through us, not to us. Let yourself be the vehicle for your own change!
